Abstract

Background: Laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation are associated with significant sympathetic stimulation leading
to tachycardia and hypertension. Various induction agents are used to attenuate these hemodynamic responses during
general anesthesia.
Aim: To compare the hemodynamic changes during endotracheal intubation using thiopentone sodium and propofol.
Materials and Methods: A prospective comparative study was conducted in the Department of Anesthesiology among
96 patients undergoing elective surgical procedures under general anesthesia. Patients were divided into two groups
receiving thiopentone sodium and propofol respectively. Heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and
mean arterial pressure were recorded before induction and after intubation. Statistical analysis was performed using
Student’s t-test. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
