Background:Preterm delivery is a significant challenge for obstetricians, with approximately 8-10% of births being preterm, leading to considerable associated burdens.
Aim:The study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of transdermal nitroglycerine as a tocolytic drug.
Methods:The study involved 200 pregnant women in preterm labor. They were divided into two groups: one receiving bed rest alone and the other receiving a nitroglycerine patch. The study lasted six months.
Results:-
56% of the women had their pregnancy extended by more than 7 days.
-
94% of the women in the nitroglycerine group experienced successful tocolysis.
-
Group I (nitroglycerine) had fewer resuscitation needs and better Apgar scores.
-
Group I had fewer low-birth-weight babies compared to Group II.
Transdermal nitroglycerine was found to be more effective as a tocolytic drug compared to other commonly used medications, making it a preferred choice for acute uterine relaxation in preterm labor.
