Abstract

Background: Hypertension is one of the leading risk factors resulting in increased risk of peripheral vascular diseases, congestive heart failure, end-stage renal diseases, myocardial infarction, and stroke. The main target organ for damage in hypertensive subjects is the kidney. Microalbuminuria is one of the earliest indicators of kidney injury in subjects with hypertension.
Aim: The present study aimed to assess the presence of albuminuria in Indian subjects with hypertension.
Methods: The study assessed 200 subjects with hypertension that were divided into two groups of 100 cases and 100 control subjects. In all the included subjects, blood pressure was measured and a spot urine sample was collected to assess the presence of microalbumin.
Results: The study showed that microalbumin and blood pressure were elevated in case group subjects compared to the subjects from the control group. The depicted difference was statistically significant with a p-value of <0.05.
Conclusions: The present study concludes that blood pressure and microalbumin levels are significantly higher in subjects with hypertension. These parameters can be effectively used as reliable biomarkers for the early identification of kidney disease and injury in subjects with hypertension.
