IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON SURGICAL TRAINING OF JUNIOR RESIDENTS- IN A TERTIARY CARE CENTER

Abstract

Background: the healthcare field is one of the most affected sectors during and following the COVID-19 pandemic globally including in India along with medical teaching. COVID-19 has severely decreased the training level of the resident healthcare personnel. However, existing literature and statistical data are scarce concerning the correlation between different phases of the COVID-19 pandemic and the satisfaction level of residents under surgical training.
Aim: The present study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the surgical training of Junior Residents- in a tertiary care center in JNMCH, AMU, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Methods: The present retrospective study was done from December 31st, 2021 & January 31st, 2022, and included 30 resident doctors with 10 subjects each from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year residency program. From each participant, data gathered were satisfaction data (based on on-hand surgical training, teaching services, perceived mental and perceived physical stress) to Surgery services-teaching services data (Outpatient department (OPD), Surgical emergency services, Surgical patient admission to ward, Elective surgeries, Seminars, and Conferences) during Pre covid, Covid phase 1, Covid phase 2 and Post covid phase of JNMCH, AMU, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, a tertiary care hospital.
Results: The study results showed a significant correlation between a reduction in both Surgery services-teaching services and Surgery resident satisfaction in Pre covid, Covid phase 1, Covid phase 2, and Post covid phase of JNMCH, AMU, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, a tertiary care hospital.Conclusions: The present study concludes and focuses on the impact of reduced Surgery services-teaching services during Covid Phase 1 and Covid Phase 2 on the reduced satisfaction of overall satisfaction levels in surgery residents.
