Abstract

Background: A common sign of a lipid abnormality is xanthoma; the most common type is xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP). On both the lower and upper eyelids, it appears as symmetrical, soft, velvety, yellowish papules and plaques. It has been noted that Xanthelasma Palpebrarum is caused by acetylated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and macrophages
Materials and Methods: This comparative, cross-sectional study conducted in Dept. of Dermatology, in which 40 patients with XP as cases and 40 patients with non-inflammatory skin disorders as controls were selected as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria matched as per the age and gender of our study.
Results: In our study, most of the patients with xanthelasma palpebrarum were females. Familial hypercholesterolemia was more common in patients with XP as compared to controls group. Hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia was more common in cases group. The difference between mean values of triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL, VLDL among the cases and control group was significant (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: We conclude that individuals with dyslipidemia are more likely to develop coronary artery disease, as the majority of patients with Xanthelasma Palpebrarum have abnormal lipid levels. The mean serum values of several lipid profile parameters (total cholesterol, HDL, TG, and VLDL) showed a significant difference in our investigation
